A jeans for two tens or a T-shirt for three euros: the clothes racks are full of it. But those low prices have a downside. According to Extinction Rebellion, the production of fast fashion Significant environmental damage and the working conditions in the production countries are often poor.
The action group today performed action in the center of Emmen and shared free clothing to draw attention to sustainable alternatives.
“Fast Fashion means that clothing is produced quickly and cheaply, which has many consequences,” explains Eva from Extinction Rebellion. According to the action group, 85 percent of the clothing will be thrown away again within a year of production. “The fashion industry is set up in such a way that consumers are constantly encouraged to buy new clothing,” said Eva.
Extinction Rebellion states that the fashion industry is responsible for 8 percent of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, a large part of the clothing produced disappears unused on the garbage dump or in the combustion oven.
