The Technical University in Eindhoven wants to herald carnival with a record attempt: the university hopes to get the longest plona in the world with 1219 participants. Employees of the TU came with the initiative. “We want to increase the solidarity through carnival,” says community manager Esther Lutterman.
Because according to the organization there is a need for that. Recently, the world has been hardening for the many expats that work or study in the Brainport region, Lutterman sees. “For example, the cabinet wants a brake on the number of foreign labor migrants and international students. That affects these people, that’s a shame.”
“Carnival is a feast of togetherness,” says Lutterman. “We want to convey that. Everyone belongs to this region and everyone matters.”
If the university sets a new world record, it will be able to use the help of the many expats from the region. “We can only break the record if we do it together. Moreover, we introduce newcomers to our carnival traditions and Brabant hospitality in this way, which also benefits the integration process. It will be a party of connection.”
1219 Polonaiselopers
To find enough participants, contact was sought with companies, schools and carnival associations from the area. On Tuesday 27 February at 3.45 pm, at least 1219 partygoers have to show up at the Vijver next to the Atlas building.
The current record is 1218. “But of course we hope for much more,” says Lutterman. “Because of course we want to hold the record for as long as possible.”
Official supervisors of the International World Records Organization will monitor the record attempt.
