A training accident by Czech Tereza Nová shook winter sports. She was in a coma for almost four weeks. Now she is awake again, but the way back is still long.
Almost a month after her difficult training in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Czech ski racer Tereza Nová awakened from a coma. The 27-year-old was in a stable state, the World Association FIS said. Now she will be moved to a hospital in the Czech Republic, where further investigations are due. After that, a long rehabilitation phase begins for the Olympic participant of 2022.
At the end of January, Nová had fallen heavily in departure training on the Kandahar piste. It was brought to the Murnau accident clinic by helicopter, where heavy traumatic brain trauma with bleeding, a violation of the carotid artery and a break in the eye socket were diagnosed. The 27-year-old had to be operated on and put in an artificial coma. Two weeks later, the doctors began to gradually reduce the medication and wake Nová.
Her partner Ondrej Berndt, who also works as a Czech national coach, spoke of a “great luck” that everyone involved reacted so quickly. He expressly thanked the clinic staff and everyone who would have supported Nová in this difficult time. During the entire hospital stay in Murnau, she was accompanied by him and her closest family. “We still have a long way ahead of us, but I am convinced that we will make it,” said Berndt.
