In the future, fewer foods and clothing should end up in the European Union.
It is planned by 2030, the food waste that arises in retail and consumption – such as at home or in restaurants – reduced by 30 percent per capita. Und to this, negotiators of the EU countries and the EU Parliament agreed. The average food waste from 2021 to 2023 are compared.
Food waste that arises in manufacture and processing is to be reduced by 10 percent. In addition, donations of unsalable but edible food should be easier.
Textile manufacturers must support costs
As announced by the European Parliament and the countries, new rules will also apply in the future to reduce clothing waste. Among other things, the costs for the collection and treatment of textile waste will in future support fashion brands and textile manufacturers.
The basis for the agreement of the two CO legislators was the proposal of the EU Commission of 2023. According to the information, almost 60 million tons of food waste is created in the EU annually-around 130 kilograms per capita. This corresponds to a value of estimated 132 billion euros. In addition, 12.6 million textile goods end up in the EU every year. Just on clothing and shoes accounted for 5.2 million tons of waste, which corresponds to 12 kilograms of waste per person and year.
Both the EU countries and the European Parliament must now take the new requirements formally before they can come into force.
