Dozens of residents of the Slingeborgh nursing home in Assen are moving to a new apartment this week. The first wing of the new care complex of Interzorg Northern Netherlands is completely ready for use.

The care complex with a total of 176 apartments will be located on the current location of the Slingeborgh and replaces both the old building and the Anholt nursing home, which is located in the city center. The buildings are very outdated and, according to Interzorg, no longer fit into the care provision of today.

Now that the first wing is ready, the residents can make the crossing to the new four -storey building. After the demolition of the current Slingeborgh, wing number two is racing in the same place, with another 88 apartments. The clients of Anholt will live there in the autumn of 2026.

Senior Arnold van den Bos is one of the residents who get a brand new apartment. For months he has been looking forward to the construction site from his living room window, so he was able to keep an eye on what his new accommodation will look like.

“In the beginning I had to get used to the idea that I had to move,” says Van den Bos. “My new apartment is slightly smaller than what I have now. At the moment I have a separate bedroom, but soon my bed will be in the living room.”

Instead, Van den Bos will get a modern home, including bathroom and toilet. In every department of the nursing home, residents can visit a joint living room where they can meet. A grand café will be built in the central part between the two wings.

“In this way, residents come into contact with each other,” says Thijs Doldersum, Care and Welfare Manager at Interzorg. “The departments get permanent teams, so that the residents always see familiar faces. For the employees it is nice that they no longer have to go off different floors.”

Van den Bos shines when he drives his new apartment with his wheelchair. All his furniture is neatly placed in the agreed location. “It is really very beautiful. We can use this for a while.”
