The DFB plans to reduce the number of potential venues for the EM of women in 2029 on Friday. The competition for the contract by the UEFA for the tournament is great.
The EM 2029 plays in eight stadiums, 14 cities have registered interest at the DFB – in the event that Germany is given the tournament. At a presidium meeting of the association on Friday, the list should be shorter.
According to the DFB documents, the following cities have submitted: Berlin, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Munich, Bremen, Leipzig, Wolfsburg, Düsseldorf, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne and Rostock. Large stadiums would have to be filled. Geographically, this results in an oversupply from North Rhine-Westphalia and from northern Germany, there are few applications from East and southern Germany. Stuttgart recently jumped off for financial reasons.
However, the UEFA requirements for 2029 provide at least one stadium with a gross capacity of 50,000 seats, at least three with 30,000 and at least four each with 20,000. Comparatively small venues are used at the European Championship in Switzerland in 2025. There the stadiums hold 38,000 (Basel), 31,500 (Bern), 30,000 (Geneva) and 24,000 spectators (Zurich). However, the game is also played in Thun (10,400) or Lucerne (16,000).
UEFA’s decision in December
By March 12, the DFB must transmit the preliminary application documents for the European Championship exit to the UEFA. All documents must be submitted final until August 27th. In December of this year, the UEFA Executive Committee will decide on the organizer. There are four other preliminary applications:
- Denmark/Sweden
- Portugal
- Poland
- Italy
In 1989 and 2001 two EM finals have taken place in 1989 and 2001, and Germany also organized the 2011 World Cup. After the men’s European Championships in the summer of 2024, the Women’s European Championships would be the next big football tournament in Germany.

DFB was subject to application for World Cup 2027
The DFB had recently failed with a joint application with the Netherlands and Belgium for the Women’s World Cup 2027, which is held in Brazil. The FIFA Congress in Bangkok voted 119: 78 votes for the application from Brazil in May 2024.
At that time, however, the European application was considered an outsider anyway. Because never before had a WM of women in South America took place, FIFA also gave the Brazilian application a better grade in their pre -published test reports.
