Upon arrival, the fire brigade found a blazing fire. “We went in both the front and back,” says Kapitein Johan Bonnier of the Wervik fire station. “The fire was quickly under control. The resident had already put the fries pot on the floor and tried to extinguish with a cloth. He probably ran burns off and was also caught by the smoke.”
During the intervention, a firefighter sprained his ankle and had to stop the intervention. He and the resident were taken to the hospital. The adjacent houses remained protected from damage.
