Sarah Michelle Gellar has officially confirmed the revival of “Buffy – under the spell of the demons”.
More than 20 years after the final of “Buffy – the spell of the demons” is certain: the vampire hunter returns! Sarah Michelle Gellar has officially confirmed that she is involved in a new edition of the cult series – and promises the fans: “This will be for you.”
In an Instagram post, the actress revealed that the first talks began three years ago. Producer Gail Berman brought Gellar together with the Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”), who is now decisive for the project. While Gellar was initially skeptical, intensive discussions led to the screenwriters Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face, Fringe) to develop the concept.
Gellar made it clear that she only wanted to return under the right conditions: “I promise you, we will only do this show if we know that we can do it right. And I can tell you that we are on the right track. “
What is known about the new “Buffy” series so far
The upcoming series will put a new hunter at the center of history, with Gellar to be seen in a recurring role as Buffy Summers. In addition to Chloé Zhao as the executive producer and director, 20th Television in collaboration with Searchlight TV takes over production. Gail Berman, who already produced the original series, is again on board – just like Dolly Parton, who was then involved in Buffy as a secret co -producer.
However, Joss Whedon, the creator of the original series, is not involved. After allegations of misconduct on the set of other productions (“Justice League”), he remains out of the new edition.
The cult around Buffy
When “Buffy-the spell of the demons” started in 1997, it was hardly foreseeable what tremendous influence the series on pop culture, fantasy series and the image of women would have on TV. Buffy was far ahead of her time with a strong female main character, intelligent humor and a mixture of horror, drama and coming-of-age.
The series quickly developed into a cult: it established the concept of the “Monster of the Week” format and made serial narrative ways popular, which are now standard in almost every streaming production. Series such as “Supernatural”, “Stranger Things” or “The Vampire Diaries” were able to learn a lot.
Sarah Michelle Gellar became a pop culture icon through the role of the Buffy Summers, as did the cast around Alyson Hannigan (Willow), David Boreanaz (Angel) and James Marsters (Spike). The soundtrack with bands like Garbage, The Breeders and The Cranberries also shaped an entire generation musically. The news about the new edition will therefore trigger a mixture of joy and nostalgia for many fans.
