With carnival, streets turn into a gang: empty shot bottles, fries trays, serpentines and flattened cups. Normally Bossche Horeca Ondernemers rent containers at the municipal waste service service to clean up the mess, but that is not possible this year. There is too few staff. One month before carnival, entrepreneurs suddenly have to look for an alternative.

“We always rent two large containers for our own waste, such as empty boxes and sauce bins. In addition, we use smaller containers for the waste from customers. They are normally picked up at night with carnival,” says Nicole Vermolen. Her family has been on the parade for over 50 years with a fries stall during major events such as carnival.

Owner Viviane Hoevenaars of Café De Unie also uses the containers of the Waste Stoffendienst every year. “I thought I will have my containers request on time this year, because if you are too late, they often have nothing in stock anymore,” she says. “But then I received an email stating that the waste service service would not have containers Rent out and empty during carnival. ”

Nicole received the same email with her request. “I thought the e -mail was meant for entrepreneurs who are new and that they sent the email wrong. But unfortunately that is not the case,” she says. “What makes it even more annoying is that many of my colleagues are nothing yet of nothing know because they have not yet submitted an application. “

“The municipality actually says: sort it out for yourself.”

Councilor Maarten Kagie heard through the entrepreneurs that the waste service service does not rent containers this year due to staff shortage. “Entrepreneurs have been counting on the service of the municipal waste service service for years. Also during carnival. I think that the municipality cannot say from one day to the next: we no longer do that, “says Kagie.” The municipality does not even offer a good alternative that you as an entrepreneur can count on, but actually says: are you looking for it Just out. “

One of the alternatives suggested in the mail is throwing the waste away in underground containers with a pass. “On the eleventh of the eleventh we also had no extra waste containers because of the staff shortages. Then we were able to make unlimited use of those underground containers,” says café owner Viviane. “But then it was one day carnival, now several. Those underground containers are quickly full, and I cannot risk that there is no room anymore. I am obliged to clean up the waste from my pub.”

Viviane does not know whether entrepreneurs can make unlimited use of these containers again. The municipality did not respond to her question about this. The underground containers are not an option for fries stall keeper Nicole. “Location holders often don’t even have such a pass. And if I would get it, not all our waste fits in. For example, empty buckets sauce are too big.”

Another possibility is hiring commercial companies that place press containers, in which waste is compressed to save space. But that is not ideal either. “I first have to check at the municipality whether I can place such a container at all,” says Nicole. “In addition, I have to arrange for the container to be emptied. Normally the municipality did that. Moreover, it costs more money.”

“Many of my colleagues know nothing yet.”

Kagie is worried and has therefore asked the alderman to come up with a solution. Next Monday the alderman will respond during the committee meeting. But for entrepreneurs like Nicole that is actually too late.

“If the municipality arranges something before the carnival, that would be very nice. But as an entrepreneur I can’t keep waiting for it. Because suppose we will not get a solution again next Monday, then I will be a week further. Then I have to have an alternative, otherwise I have nothing to do with carnival and that is not an option. ”

The municipality of Den Bosch did not respond to questions from Omroep Brabant.
