The women of VfL Wolfsburg have a change in the goalkeeper position: coach Tommy Stroot relies on Anneke Borbe as the new number one in the second half of the season. Former goalkeeper Merle Frohms loses her regular place at the seven -time German champion.
After the 3-0 victory against Carl Zeiss Jena, Stroot explained that Borbe is currently standing in front of Frohms. The 24-year-old was already in the goal in the game against the promoted. The coach emphasized that the decision applies to the second half of the season. At the same time, he made it clear that Frohms would continue to be there with full commitment and would still come to missions.
Just a week and a half ago it became known that the 30-year-old will probably leave VfL in summer. A change abroad is considered safe, but according to coach Stroot, this is not the reason for the goalkeeper trochade. The transfer has not yet been officially confirmed.
For Frohms, the degradation is the next setback. Already last summer she lost her place as number one in the German national team to Ann-Katrin Berger. Germany won bronze at the Olympic Games. Her resignation from the national team followed in September. In 2022 she was still in goal as a regular keeper when Germany became Vice European champion.
