Leo Joo-Sil is dead. The actress, who was primarily known for her role in the Netflix series “Squid Game”, died at the age of 80. The cause of death: stomach cancer.
However, it is unclear whether she died during therapeutic treatment at the Shinchon Severance Hospital in Seoul, as reported “The Economic Times”, or whether the mimin “died in her family house in the city of Uijeongbu, South Korea”, such as “Deadline” has reported.
After a short illness
According to the Korean newspaper “The Chosen Iljo”, Leo Joo-Sil received the stomach cancer diagnosis three months ago. In addition, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in the third stage in her fifties – at that time probably with a life expectancy of less than a year, according to the actress in an interview with “MBN’s Special World”. After 13 years, however, there was supposedly the all -clear with regard to breast cancer.
To your career
After the diagnosis, Leo Joo-Sil continued to work if it allowed her health. Since December 2024 she has been seen in the second season of the Netflix series “Squid Game” in the role of the park. She plays the mother of the undercover detective Hwang Jun Ho and the stepmother of Hwang in Ho. It is unknown whether the mimin was also planned for the third season of the format.
Since she was 20 years old, Leo Joo-Sil has worked as an actress and as a voice speaker. Her career extended over a period of 60 years. From 1965 she was seen on stage with “Macbeth”. For over twenty years she also played in the “Country Diaries” series (1980 to 2002). She was also there in the new Korean TV series “Beauty and Mr. Romantic” (2024) and “It’s Beautiful Now” (2022).
Last but not least, she became known internationally with the series “Unherrt opponent” (2020) and the thriller “Train to Busan” (2016) by also embodied a mother. In 2023 she won the prize of the best part -time actress of the Wildflower Film Festival.
