Great parts of the quays of the Verlengde Hoogeveense Vaart in Noordscheschut and the Hoogeveense Vaart along the Krakeel district in Hoogeveen are being replaced. The bank protection, as it is officially called, is in poor condition in those places.
The sheet piles between the bank and the channel are rotten at the waterline, which makes the banks unstable. If the quays are not replaced, subsidence can occur with danger to the bank, road traffic or shipping.
Near the Noordscheschutsluis, 130 meters of old concrete sheet piles must be replaced by new, anchored walls. Due to the work in Noordscheschut, the Drostenraai next to the extended Hoogeveense Vaart was closed until March. Cyclists and walkers can pass it. If the concrete walls on that side are all in it, the work on the other side of the Noordscheschutsluis (Meester Sterkenweg) continues.
With Krakeel, the job will take longer, because almost the entire quay has to be replaced from the Splissing Industriehaven Hoogeveen/Verlengde Hoogeveense Vaart to the Krakeel bicycle bridge. 260 meters of steel sheet pile wall must be replaced. From 460 meters of steel sheet pile wall is removed the upper, poor part to just below the waterline and the bank is partly excavated. Stones then come on top of the lowered sheet piles and excavated bank. This is a nature-friendly design, so that animals can climb in and out and grow plants better.
At Krakeel, work is done up to and including June. The local residents have little or no trouble of these activities, because almost all work will be carried out from the water. The pedestrian and cycle path along the Hoogeveense Vaart will be partially closed to be able to carry out the work safely. The pedestrians and cyclists can walk around this closure.
