The Nutrition Center warns of a new trend: the carnivoordet. This diet means that you can only eat animal products, so no fruit and vegetables. On social media it is promoted by fitness and health influencers, such as the Eindhoven Noud van der Vloet. But a small group of dietitians is also positive about this ‘only meat’ diet. The Nutrition Center guesses: “Everything is said about on social media, while it is important for your health to eat varied.”

Supporters of the Carnivoord diet talk about their animal diet through videos on YouTube and other social media. And they are not the only one: that eating more animal food has a positive effect on your health even some dietitians think.

‘Dubious Trend’
What does the Nutrition Center think of this? It is clear to them, they completely advise against a carnivoord diet. “By eating only animal products you miss important nutrients, such as fiber, vitamins and minerals from fruit, vegetables and whole -grain products. You also miss the health benefits of vegetable products. This diet is also far from sustainable, “said a spokesperson.

The Dutch Association of Dietitians is also critical. The club says that all dietitians who are affiliated with them follow the advice of the Nutrition Center. Milieudefensie also looks at the diet with sorrow and speaks of a ‘dubious trend’. “If everyone were to get all their proteins exclusively from beef, then you emit as much as a petrol car that drives from Amsterdam to Antwerp and you need a piece of land every day the size of a volleyball court,” said a spokesperson.

Infected
Not everyone is sensitive to these arguments. By means of influencers the diet is promoted as super healthy. One of them is fitness entrepreneur Noud van de Vloet from Eindhoven. He has been eating meat for more than three years and says that many positive effects are noticed. “Meat is the most nutritious thing we can eat as people, there is no doubt about that. The diet that we follow nowadays contains so much mess, lots of sugars, lots of carbohydrates, a lot of processed food and that makes people sick, “says Noud.

Noud gets support from dietician Nienke Vink: “Eating more animal food has had a positive effect on my health for me. For this I always used supplements and now no more, my values ​​have improved. No more nutrients from a jar or pill is the main reason for me why I eat animal products. ”

Health risks
The Nutrition Center and Milieudefensie emphasize that they base themselves on numerous scientific research that shows that (a lot of) eating meat is bad for health and the planet. According to the Nutrition Center, the chance of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and a (too) high cholesterol increases.

Noud does not take this warning seriously: “The Nutrition Center bases that on a lot of incorrect research, because several factors play a role in someone’s health.” And Dietitian Nienke also likes to let her nutrition advice pass by. She thinks people can get sick from the advice of the center. “What I see in practice is that advice from the Nutrition Center for many people cause complaints rather than resolving.”

The other way
Strikingly enough, in addition to the ‘only meat’ diet, there is also a trend that precisely the opposite recommend. The vegan diet, which means that you do not eat animal food.

According to the Nutrition Center, the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and an elevated cholesterol are reduced in a diet with less animal and more vegetable diet. So not only better for your body, but also a piece (plant) nicer for our environment.
