From the Chinese giant a push to the methanol to be used in the world of competitions to break down consumption and emissions. Motorsport tests and then migrate to commercial and cars vehicles

January 31 – 22:35 – MILAN

Geely presented his first Metanol -powered racing carsuccessfully tested during the rigid winter season. Tests that are accompanied by the launch of a real championship dedicated to cars fed with this type of technology. The prototype is equipped with the Aurobay-Dhe20tdm enginecompatible with the M100 fuel and compliant with the Chinese VI-B emission standards, assimilated to our Euro6 legislation. With thermal efficiency of more than 46% and a compression ratio of 15: 1 the methanol offers, at least on paper, performance higher than traditional petrol engines. It also ensures high torque levels, helping to significantly reduce polluting emissions. The Chinese giant provides for the introduction of methanol vehicles in the Geely Super Cup Pro series already in 2026 and bets on the future development of unpublished renewable energy projects to be organized in the sports field.

Towards commercial vehicles

Focusing on methanol as a “green” and alternative fuel, therefore confirms the position of the president of Geely, the Shufu, who has repeatedly intervened on the subject. Which considers this type of nutrition a cardinal element within a new generation of energy sources. A journey that comes from afar, undertaken in 2005 with the launch of Geely of commercial vehicles in Metanolo in the cities of Xi’an and Guiyang. Models still at the center of the Geely project that is testing its potential, especially if combined with electrical transmissions. Hybrid systems that could reduce emissions of over 70% compared to traditional diesel engines. Meanwhile, Geely has started the construction of a vast structure dedicated to the production of methanol in Mongolia. From here, once in full rate, over 50 thousand tons of methanol per year should arrive. A size that does not scare the Geely management, considered the high ease of methanol storage.

The Toyota experience

Parallel to Toyota, it is experiencing alternative energy sources to traditional ones. And also in this case it is the stage of Motorsport that wears the laboratory clothes. The Japanese manufacturer, already in 2023, participated in the Eneos Super Taikyu Series with the Toyota Corolla gr h2 conceptfirst liquid hydrogen car to compete in an official competition. With a reduced weight of over 50 kg and an almost doubled autonomy with respect to traditional motorization. Among other things, Toyota will gradually introduce a hydrogen competition model also in the WEC. First to be joined to the GR 010 GRIDA and then replace it gradually within the next 5 years. Without forgetting the compact Toyota Gr Yaris H2 from Rallyalso hydrogen. Model which, as already seen with the corolla gr H2, does not use an electric motor, but maintains the same architecture of the thermal version. With hydrogen that in this case does not produce electricity, but which replaces petrol.
