A significant part of the street lighting along the Hondsrugweg and the Nieuw Amsterdamsestraat in Emmen may be permanently on black. According to Alderman Albert-Jan Jakobs (Wakker Emmen), there is currently a plan in preparation.

The alderman thus responds to questions from VVD councilor Marcel Meijer. He noticed that it was quite dark along the New Amsterdamsestraat. “As a true resident of Emmen, I regularly pass on defective lampposts to the municipality.”

The reaction he got back surprised him. “I received the notification that there is no repair, but that the municipality is working on a blackout project.”

According to Meijer, this meant that from next year a large part of the lighting along the Nieuw Amsterdamsestraat (the part between the Ermerweg and the viaduct at the A37) would be permanently extinguished. The same would be for the part of the Hondsrugweg (between the Brinkenweg and Rondweg exits). The decision would depend on an evaluation. Whether the alderman knew more?

Jakobs confirmed the story that Meijer told him. According to him, the plan is implemented at the request of various neighborhood boards. According to them, residents experience nuisance of light. “Now that we are about to replace the lighting, we thought it would be a good time to realize this.”

According to Jakobs, the plan is still being prepared and the council will be informed about it later.

The VVD was not the only one who raised defective lampposts. Ugbaad Kilinçci (PvdA) also reported that the street lighting has been defective for a while at various roads. In addition to parts of the ring road, according to her it goes around the corner of Dordsestraat/Boermarkeweg and parts of the Statenweg and Ermerweg.

According to Jakobs, half of those problems are tackled in the short term. The Dordsestraat/Boermarkeweg corner is being overhauled. Then the lighting is also taken, around May. The Statenweg will be tackled all this spring.

The ring road is in the hands of the province, so the municipality is not about that. The problems on the Ermerweg were new to the alderman.
