Last week, biathlon star Johannes Thingnes Bö announced the end of his career. Now his brother followed suit.

His brother has already shown him how to do it, and now Tarjei Bö has taken the same step. The 36-year-old is ending his career after the current season. Johannes Thingnes Bö, who is around five years younger than him, announced the end of his career a week ago.

Tarjei Bö triumphed in the sprint in Antholz on Friday. He then tearfully announced: “My wife is here, plus the victory. This is the perfect day for this big announcement.” And further: “I knew before the season that it would be my last. My feeling in my body was: It’s enough now, I don’t want to work for the Olympics anymore because it’s very hard work.”

Bö also stated that he wanted to stop at the peak. “I felt all winter long that it was time. I’m still one of the best biathletes in the world and that’s how I want to end it,” he said after his 15th World Cup success and added about his brother and the World Championships starting on February 9th in Lenzerheide: “Now we’re both quitting, but we still have two months together, then we can approach the last races and the last World Cup with a big laugh.”

Bö says goodbye after a career full of success. With two Olympic relay victories, an Olympic gold in the mixed relay and eleven world championship titles, he leaves a gap in biathlon. He will also be remembered as the youngest overall World Cup winner in history.

The former German biathlete and current ZDF expert Laura Dahlmeier commented on his resignation: It was a strong sign that he was listening to his body and that the step felt right for him. At the same time, she described the double farewell of the brothers Tarjei and Johannes Thingnes Bö as a loss for the sport of biathlon.
