Next Tuesday, January 28, the medical-scientific symposium, “Italy and UK pre-participation screening program from elite to amateur: a common effort to prevent sudden cardiac death in the young” will be held at the Italian embassy in London . The event, co-organised by the Italian Embassy and the Italian Sports Medicine Federation (Fmsi), with the direct collaboration of Lord Polak, member of the House of Lords, will compare Italian and British cardiologists and sports doctors on the topic of screening programs for the risk of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.

“This event testifies to the value recognized throughout the world of the Italian model of Sports Medicine: the national laws and the scientific protocols of the Italian Sports Medicine Federation, the only scientific society of Sports Medicine in Italy, have allowed the extraordinary reduction in sudden deaths from sport in our country compared to the rest of the world, in a ratio of 1 to 1 and a half million versus 1 to one hundred thousand” underlines the Fmsi president, Maurizio Casasco. “The certification of suitability to practice sports has great value in terms of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention – continues Casasco – both in the fight against the main non-communicable pathologies (cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, oncological, metabolic, etc.), and because it allows identify potential risk factors or minor pathologies, with clear benefits for the individual’s state of health and quality of life and consequent savings for the National Health Service and the insurance system”. The symposium is part of the framework of the bilateral collaboration Memorandum of Understanding signed by Italy and the United Kingdom in 2023, and which encourages dialogue between medical personnel of the two countries. “I am proud that the Italian embassy hosts the symposium and actively contributed to organizing it, thanks to the active support of the Fmsi and its president Casasco. In fact, I am certain that the Italian screening model can be of great interest for the British healthcare system”, highlighted Ambassador Inigo Lambertini.
