A fire broke out in a vacant former catering building on the Markt in the center of Roosendaal on Thursday evening. The building is empty. The smoke moved over the city for a long time. There were no people in the building when the fire broke out.
The fire broke out around eight o’clock. The fire brigade quickly scaled up to a major fire. The area around the building was cordoned off. Surrounding buildings were monitored to prevent the fire from spreading. The fire was under control around a quarter to ten and the fire brigade started extinguishing the fire.
Squatters
According to a local resident, it is common knowledge that many squatters reside in the building. The same local resident says that a light was on in the building before the fire broke out. The fire brigade advised people affected by the smoke to keep windows and doors closed and to switch off ventilation.
