The Oscar nominations for the March 3rd ceremony have been announced. Also among those mentioned: The drama “The Seeds of the Sacred Fig Tree” by Mohammad Rasoulof. The work of the Hamburg-based Iranian filmmaker is nominated in the Best International Film category alongside “I’m Still Here”, “The Girl with the Needle”, “Emilia Pérez” and “Flow”.

That’s what it’s all about / background

“The Seeds of the Sacred Fig Tree” is all about the mass protests in Iran that began in September 2022 with the death of the Kurdish Jina Mahsa Amini. The film was largely made on German soil, which is why it is now also competing for Germany at the Academy Awards.

While other films in the category – see “Emilia Pérez” and “I’m Still Here” – have also been nominated elsewhere, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig Tree” remains the only nomination at the Oscars.

Not the first nomination for Rasoulof

Mohammad Rasoulof has already won several awards in his career. For example, the Special Jury Prize in Cannes in 2024. He also received the Golden Bear at the 2022 Berlinale for “There is no evil”.

Rasoulof was sentenced to prison in his home country, which is why he now lives in Germany.
