After Lucas Martínez Quarta (28, Fiorentina), CA River Plate is strengthening itself for the new season with further returnees. Coach Marcelo Gallardo guides Argentina’s World Cup hero Gonzalo Montiel (28) and offensive player Sebastián Driussi (28) back to the top Argentine club. All three have already played over 100 games under the 49-year-old.
While Sevilla FC received 4.5 million euros for Montiel, Austin FC received around 9.75 million euros for Driussi – only four additions were more expensive at River Plate. The expenses in the current transfer window will therefore rise to 21.25 million euros.
Right-back Montiel, who scored the decisive penalty against France in the 2022 World Cup final, left River Plate for Sevilla in 2021. After a loan spell at Nottingham last season, he barely featured at the LaLiga club. Driussi had already moved from River Plate to Zenit St. Petersburg in 2017, and made the jump to the MLS four years later. With 51 goals in 115 appearances, he is the top scorer in Austin’s short history.
