With great expectations, Manchester United brought in Rúben Amorim as their new coach in the autumn. After a few months, the Portuguese comes to a stark conclusion.
With a bitter 1:3 home defeat against Brighton, Manchester United continued its negative trend of the past few months. Afterwards, coach Rúben Amorim launched into general criticism of his own team. “We are probably the worst team in the club’s history. We have to realize that and, above all, change it,” said the Portuguese harshly.
Amorim is by no means wrong. In fact, the English record champions are currently recording a lot of inglorious statistics. The last time there were six defeats in twelve home games was 131 years ago, which resulted in the first ever relegation. The last time there were ten defeats after 22 games in the Premier League was 35 years ago. “We have to be aware that we are about to break every negative record,” Amorim appealed to his players.
The Portuguese is known for expressing his criticism clearly. Before the turn of the year it was “a bit embarrassing” to be the team manager of Manchester United, and relegation was even possible. Now he followed up. “You have to imagine this for our fans and also for me: with a new coach we lose more games than with the previous team manager,” complained the 39-year-old.
In eleven games since he took over as Erik ten Hag’s successor last November, they have only managed three wins and six defeats, and the Red Devils are languishing in 13th place in the Premier League. However, Amorim doesn’t want to change anything about his style of play.
