Goalkeeper Manuel Riemann from Bundesliga club VfL Bochum is facing a surprising change a few weeks after the suspension was lifted.

As “Bild” and “Sky” report, VfL Bochum’s long-standing goalkeeper Manuel Riemann is moving to the 2nd Bundesliga. It is said that he could soon sign up for SC Paderborn.

On the one hand, Riemann’s departure from Bochum would come as a surprise, as the 36-year-old only celebrated his long-awaited return to the team at the end of November after months of dispute with the club in court. On the other hand, it would probably also be the logical consequence for the club and players given the broken relationship.

VfL coach Dieter Hecking made it clear immediately after the goalkeeper’s return that he was still relying on Patrick Drewes as number one. The experienced Timo Horn is also in the squad as a deputy. According to “Bild”, Manuel Riemann was still convinced that his good performance in training could persuade the experienced coach to change his mind.

However, Riemann has not even been in the Revierklub’s matchday squad since his return.

VfL Bochum could save Riemann’s salary

According to the report, a move to SC Paderborn in the 2nd league should, from the goalkeeper’s point of view, be linked to the prospect of getting playing time. In the current eighth table, coach Lukas Kwasniok has goalkeepers Markus Schubert and Pelle Boevink at his disposal.

Should Riemann actually leave VfL Bochum this winter, the club would be able to make important salary savings. According to “Bild”, the veteran will make around 300,000 euros by the end of the season, and the collaboration will end at the end of June anyway.

Manuel Riemann came to VfL Bochum from SV Sandhausen in 2015 and can look back on a total of 98 Bundesliga and 236 second division games in his career.
