Leon Goretzka is important again at FC Bayern. TV expert Lothar Matthäus praises the central midfielder for his character and brings a contract extension in Munich into play.
Leon Goretzka led FC Bayern to a 3-2 home win against VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday with a brace.
The midfielder was in head coach Vincent Kompany’s starting line-up in the duel with the Wolves, as he was at the start of the year against Borussia Mönchengladbach (1-0). At the start of the season, the Bochum native’s sporting situation looked completely different.
Goretzka was one of the candidates for sale at FC Bayern and initially received hardly any playing time. But the 29-year-old fought his way back on Säbener Straße – much to the delight of record national player Lothar Matthäus.
Matthäus advises FC Bayern to stay with Goretzka
“I have always stood behind Leon because I appreciate his abilities and, above all, his character,” enthused the 1990 world champion on “Sky90”. Goretzka is “honest, straightforward and gives everything on the pitch, otherwise he wouldn’t have made this comeback,” praised the 63-year-old.
Matthäus continued: “I’m really happy that he managed to fight against this resistance. That shows his character, Borussia Dortmund, for example, would need a player like that.”
The TV expert advises FC Bayern to continue with Goretzka beyond the current season. “If the performance continues to be good, I would think about extending the contract,” said Matthäus.
Goretzka has a working paper with the Bundesliga leaders until 2026. The 57-time national player moved from FC Schalke 04 to Munich on a free transfer in 2018. Since then, they have won five championships, two victories in the DFB Cup and the Champions League triumph in 2020.
