At the end of the 20th matchday in the 3rd league, SV Waldhof Mannheim and FC Ingolstadt played a draw. The Schanzer saved the draw when they were outnumbered over time, Mannheim is still stuck in the bottom of the table.
The duel between the table 15. and the fifth place in the 3rd league ended in a 0-0 draw on Sunday evening (January 19th). In front of 8,164 spectators in Mannheim’s Carl Benz Stadium, the hosts played in the majority for half an hour, but still failed to convert the increased chances into goals. For the Kurpfälzer, who are threatened with relegation, it is the fifth game in a row without a win.
Waldhof with a committed start against Ingolstadt
Mannheim got off to a committed start and had their first chance of the game in the first minute of the game. However, Nicklas Shipnoski’s header went over the goal. The Waldhof played confidently in the early stages and had more of the game against Ingolstadt, who had recently been in strong form. In the 16th minute, the weakest offensive in the league had another opportunity to take the lead: Henning Matriciani pulled away from the edge of the penalty area and tested FCI keeper Marius Funk. He let the ball ricochet and Simon Lorenz cleared it in front of Samuel Abifade at the last second.
After about half an hour the Schanzer appeared in front of the opponent’s goal – and how! Deniz Zeitler put it halfway across where Mannheim’s goalkeeper Jan-Christoph Bartels flew past the ball. But Ingolstadt’s center forward Sebastian Grönning also missed the ball by centimeters while standing freely in front of the goal and thus also missed the lead (32nd). In an otherwise uneventful first half, the score remained 0-0.
Ingolstadt with a red card and a goal that was offside
After the break, Mannheim coach Bernhard Trares and Ingolstadt coach Sabrina Wittmann sent their teams back onto the pitch without any personnel changes. What also remained the same: Mannheim’s increased possession of the ball. However, the people from the Electoral Palatinate were unable to pose a real goal threat against weak guests. The first excitement of the second half came after just under an hour when Ingolstadt’s Deichmann, trying to get hold of a missed ball, hit Janne Sietan in the shin with an open sole and was consequently shown a red card for the action (58th).
The Mannheimers increased the pressure and Trares brought fresh offensive power with Felix Lohkemper and Arianit Ferati. In the 69th minute, the duo immediately became a goal threat, but Lohkemper couldn’t get the ball over the line after Ferati’s free kick. Instead, there was a crash on the other side, but Pascal Testroet, who was also a recent substitute, was offside when he scored from close range (71′).
Mannheim misses a huge opportunity shortly before the end
The Electoral Palatinate team did not let this deter them, they continued to press and play for the opening goal. In the 85th minute it got loud in the Mannheim stadium, but Ferati’s shot hit the crossbar. Lohkemper’s follow-up shot was blocked by his own teammate before Ferati failed again – this time to keeper Funk. Even in a turbulent final phase, the score remained a draw. The Waldhof remains stuck in the table cellar in 15th place, while Ingolstadt remains fifth.
