On January 9, Furkan walked home from Krommenie-Assendelft station after dinner around ten o’clock. Along the way he was approached by a man, after which he was unexpectedly hit on the head and assaulted. “He was completely covered in blood,” his mother Yagmur told NH at the time. According to the family, Furkan was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Police also don’t know why Furkan was attacked.
Perpetrator betrays himself
Later it turns out that the perpetrator filmed the attack himself and spread it online, Yagmur says. The video, which was viewed by NH, clearly shows Furkan lying injured on the ground and receiving several kicks. Those images have been forwarded to the police several times, Yagmur was told at the police station. “So he basically gave himself away.”
A police spokesperson cannot confirm whether the images of the attack led to the arrest. “It was based on investigative work, and that certainly includes tips.”
Lasting pain and fear
Now that a suspect is in custody, Yagmur is extremely relieved. For Furkan it is also a small bright spot in dark days. He continues to have pain in his head and face, has problems speaking and has not dared to go outside since the attack. “He sleeps next to me in bed out of fear,” Yagmur said.
The suspect is still in custody and is being interrogated.
