It was “one of the most lucrative sports contracts of all time,” headlined “The Athletic” on Friday morning, shortly before Erling Haaland extended his contract with Manchester City until 2034. This means that the 24-year-old attacker has the longest contract term of all professionals in the Transfermarkt database and knocks two Chelsea players off their throne in this ranking. Nevertheless, it is mainly Blues footballers who dominate these statistics.

Haaland moved from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City in 2022 for a release clause of 60 million euros, setting a new Premier League record with 36 goals in his first season and winning the treble. In 126 games for the Citizens he scored 111 goals and since the market value update in October he has been, along with Vinicius Junior, the most valuable footballer in the world. Its market value is 200 million euros.

According to media reports, Haaland has become the highest-paid footballer in the history of the Premier League with his new working paper. His old exit clause was deleted. As transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano reports, a significantly higher rate will apply from 2029. He replaces Chelsea professionals Cole Palmer (22) and Nicolas Jackson (23), whose contracts run until 2033, as players with the longest term in the TM database.

Contracts until 2031 or longer: Half of the professionals play at Chelsea

There are 18 professionals under contract in Europe’s top 5 leagues until at least 2031. The list is dominated by teams from the Premier League, 14 of which earn their money on the island. Chelsea FC plays a big part in this – half of all the footballers on this list play for the Blues.

In England, clubs are under particular pressure due to the PSR agreement (Profit and Sustainability Rules); just last season, Nottingham Forest and Everton FC were punished with point deductions. Transfer fees are amortized over the entire term of the contract, so long working papers help to comply with these rules.
