According to consistent media reports, Kike Salas from Sevilla FC is suspected of having provoked yellow cards during sports betting last season. He was temporarily arrested by police, the AP news agency reported, citing the league. The club itself referred to the presumption of innocence.
Salas is said to have helped people close to him to earn money from sports betting, the newspaper “El Confidencial” wrote, citing the police. According to AP, Salas was released on conditional terms. Sevilla FC said in a statement that the club respects the judicial process, but also referred to the presumption of innocence and condemned any form of sports fraud.
The league wants to join the case as a private plaintiff, as state television “RTVE” reported. There was no statement from the player about the allegations. Investigators suspect that the Seville-born player may have been involved in around 30 bets, which, according to initial investigations, would have brought in a profit of around 10,000 euros in one month, as the Europa Press news agency further wrote. These were games in the top Spanish league that took place in the final phase of the previous season.
Salas saw ten yellow cards in the entire LaLiga season, seven of them in his last eight games from March to May. He was warned twice late in stoppage time of a game.
