A piece of history is about to disappear in the Angelslo district of Emmen. The demolition of the old community center on Statenweg will start in about two weeks. The old building will make way for a new community center, plus an Aldi supermarket.

This week, demolition company Mussche from Staphorst started preparations for demolition. “There are various parts of asbestos that we have to remove in advance, plus an old vinyl floor in which asbestos has been incorporated into the glue,” says Jan Holterman on behalf of the company. Construction fences have now been placed around the building and shrubs and trees are being removed.

The actual demolition will begin after an official starting moment on Monday, January 27, with councilor Albert-Jan Jakobs giving the go-ahead. “After that, we will probably be busy with the demolition for another six to seven weeks,” Holterman thinks. “We will use an access route via the parking lot behind it as a supply and discharge route, to limit inconvenience to the neighborhood as much as possible and to prevent traffic problems on the Statenweg.” The outdated community center, previously known as De Marke and De Cluft, must be demolished because the energy costs became unsustainable and the building no longer meets current requirements.
