Bitter surprise for Sven Goran Eriksson’s family. The former coach of Lazio, Roma and Sampdoria, who passed away last August 26 at the age of 76 after a long illness, reportedly contracted debts of almost 10 million euros in the last years of his life. This is what the Swedish media report, describing how Eriksson’s children are already trying to take action by putting Björkefors Manor, the luxurious family villa in Sunne, Värmland county, up for sale: it is a lake-view estate with 7 bedrooms bed and every kind of comfort. Price: 2 million euros, an important sum but far less than that needed to save the family finances.

WHAT HAPPENED

In the past Eriksson had publicly admitted that he had financial problems due – according to him – to a scam. And the former England coach had pointed the finger at Samir Khan, his former financial advisor, who in the early 2000s – when he was at the height of his fame – convinced him to make a series of bad investments (including a batch of almost 100 apartments in Southsea, Hampshire). Eriksson, however, has repeatedly denounced that he was deceived: “Samir Khan is probably the only person on Earth that I hate. I’m not a guy who has many enemies, but I feel disappointed and angry because I trusted this man to many, many years. I gave him too much freedom.” The professional relationship was then interrupted in 2007, when Eriksson first fired and then reported Khan: sentenced to compensation by the court, the broker declared bankruptcy, thus dashing the hopes of the Eriksson family.

TAX DEBT

Now it’s up to the heirs to take care of the problem, including the approximately 9 million euros of debts with HM Revenue & Customs, the equivalent of the United Kingdom Revenue Agency. In one of his last interviews before his illness, in 2017, Eriksson revealed to the media that he had problems managing money: “I don’t know how much money I have earned in my career – his words – but above all I don’t have the faintest idea of what happened to them.”
