Freddie Mercury saw the “Bohemian Rhapsody” scene from “Wayne’s World” before his death
A classic from December 8, 2020.
“Wayne’s World” wasn’t released until a few weeks after Freddie Mercury’s death. Nevertheless, the singer still got something from one of the funniest nods to Queen’s greatest song.
Guitarist Brian May confirmed this at a nostalgic reunion of those involved under the title “Wayne’s World Reunited Apart – PARTY TIME!”.
Many of the cast members, including Mike Myers, Alice Cooper, Dana Carvey and Steven Tyler, who starred in “Wayne’s World 2,” attended the event. Which of course took place as a video conference in these Corona times. But everyone was visibly and audibly happy about the occasion. And remembered the creation of many silly, memorable scenes.
Freddie Mercury couldn’t stop laughing
But how did Freddie Mercury come up with the famous headbanging sequence? “Wayne’s World” lead actor Mike Myers gave Brian May a VHS tape with a copy of the film and showed it to him. The guitarist vividly remembers how happy the Queen singer was: “He loved it, he laughed and laughed and laughed. He was already very weak, but he just smiled and laughed.”
Freddie Mercury’s passing and the “Wayne’s World” reference to Queen brought the band back to prominence in the US, where they had been out of the spotlight for a long time. According to May, Mercury had previously joked that he would probably have to die so that Queen could be successful again in the USA.

Interestingly, Mike Myers was unaware that the private performance for the Queen singer had taken place. In the group chat he was enthusiastic: “The little guy from Toronto can’t handle this news (the actor was born in Scarborough, east of Toronto in Canada, editor’s note). But this is just fantastic.”
May confirmed to him: “You did it! You brought us back the American audience, and Freddie was very aware of that beforehand. He went to another place and knew what had happened.”
