Is an ex-Leipziger coming to Munich?
Report: Chelsea offers Bayern striker exchange

According to media reports, a player swap is imminent between the top London club and the Munich team. The “Blues” have their sights set on a striker who rarely gets a chance at Bayern.
The winter transfer window is open until the beginning of February. Now a surprising deal is looming between FC Bayern Munich and Chelsea FC. As transfer expert Fabrizio Romano and “Bild” unanimously report, the Londoners are showing great interest in Bayern’s storm talent Mathys Tel. In return, they are said to be ready to hand over Christopher Nkunku to the record champions, who have not yet taken off in the Premier League as hoped.
Mathys Tel is considered one of the greatest offensive talents in Europe, but hasn’t really come into his own this season. Despite only playing 351 minutes and not scoring a goal in the first half of the season, Bayern actually don’t want to let go of the 19-year-old talent. Internally, the decision was made a few weeks ago not to loan Tel out because he should remain an option in important games in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
However, Chelsea are apparently planning for the long-term with the young French striker and should offer him a salary of four to five million euros per year. The English club is serious and, according to “Bild” information, has already contacted Tel and his agent.
In order to convince Bayern of a deal, a swap with Nkunku is on the cards. The 27-year-old moved from RB Leipzig to Chelsea for 60 million euros in the summer of 2023, but has not yet been able to establish himself there. As a variable attacker, Nkunku can operate both on the wings and centrally – a quality that Bayern is missing in the current season.
However, a potential move from Nkunku to Munich faces a financial hurdle. The Frenchman reportedly earns the equivalent of around 17.8 million euros per year in London – a sum that Bayern has only paid to a few players so far. Working with Nkunku’s advisor Pini Zahavi is also likely to be complex. The Munich team recently had difficult negotiations with Zahavi regarding the transfers of Robert Lewandowski and David Alaba.
Tel himself is said to want to stay in Munich for the time being despite Chelsea’s interest. Nevertheless, Bayern are keeping the door open for a move for the Frenchman if an attractive offer arises.
Whether the spectacular exchange actually takes place will likely be decided in the coming days. A move from Nkunku back to the Bundesliga and Tel’s move to England would definitely be one of the most eye-catching deals of this transfer window.
