The demonstration by the Ajax supporters has not yet been officially registered, a spokesperson for the municipality said. “But if groups of Ajax supporters come for the demonstration, we will facilitate that. People have the right to demonstrate. Then we will ensure that it happens in a neat and orderly manner.”
To prevent fans of AZ and Ajax from meeting each other, the Ajax players’ demonstration may be moved to another point in the city. “That could be the Horse Market, Canada Square, or in front of the town hall. But that is not final yet.” The spokesperson also said that it is not yet certain whether Ajax fans will come to Alkmaar tomorrow. “We have seen the messages online, but we have not received any signals about it yet.”
Why do Ajax fans want to demonstrate?
During the Premier League match on December 8 between both clubs café Het Spoortje in Alkmaar attacked by Ajax hooligans. Several windows were smashed and a number of people were slightly injured. No one had to be taken to the hospital, but three people were arrested.
The Alkmaar mayor Anja Schouten then decided that Ajax fans are not welcome in Alkmaar during Tuesday’s cup match. One of the reasons Schouten cited was the large deployment of officers during the incident who were called from all over the province. “We can therefore only conclude that it is not only the course of events in the stadium that determines the deployment of the police,” the mayor of Alkmaar said at the time.
