According to US media reports, the Facebook group Meta is now also scaling back measures for equal opportunities and diversity – after relaxing hate speech rules and the planned stop to fact checks in the USA.

“We will no longer have a team focused on DEI,” the news portal Axios quoted, among others, from an internal communication from the company. “DEI” stands for “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion”. This means that companies ensure that people of different origins, different genders or with disabilities have equal opportunities in the workplace.

The reason for the move is the change in the “legal and political landscape” in the USA. Observers see this as a reaction to the impending change of government. Future President Donald Trump will be inaugurated on January 20th. According to CNN information, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg is said to have met with Trump on Friday at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. However, Meta did not comment on the meeting.

The concept of diversity has “also become explosive because it is understood by some as a practice that suggests preferential treatment of certain groups over others,” the memo reportedly continues. When it comes to new hires, applicants with different backgrounds will continue to be selected. Instead of training programs for equality and inclusion, other programs for fair and consistent practices will be developed, says Meta.

In addition to Facebook, Meta also includes the photo and video app Instagram as well as WhatsApp and the short message service Threads.
