The many parking zones in Breda have been causing confusion and errors for years. Sometimes the municipality applies different rates and times in one street. That has changed this year. The paid parking area has been divided into two different zones, making it a lot clearer. But at the same time, parkers will soon have to pay to park their car in more and more residential areas.

According to the municipality of Breda, the large number of different parking zones in the city was actually intended to improve parking in Breda. But that turned out differently. Errors, unintentional additional charges and ‘a negative parking experience’ were the result, according to a spokesperson for the municipality of Breda.

The council therefore felt that a change in the ‘parking regime’ was necessary. “It all becomes a lot clearer. From the signs on the street to the vending machines and in the parking apps.”

New rates and times
In the patchwork of paid parking, times and prices varied greatly. From January 1, there will be two different parking zones in the city: inside and outside the canals. This makes some parking spaces more expensive and some cheaper.

Within the canals you pay 2.70 euros per hour. Outside the canals you pay 1.80 per hour. These rates are currently in effect. The times are also different, so you pay within the canals until one o’clock at night, outside the canals until ten o’clock in the evening (and on Sundays until six o’clock).

Changes and exceptions
In several neighborhoods where parking was previously free, parking will soon have to be paid. This concerns various neighborhoods in the ‘shell’ around the city center, such as the neighborhood around the Slingerweg, Haagpoort and part of the Heuvel. Then it is time for Doornbos, part of Boeimeer and finally the Tuinzigt district.

“A whole communication approach has been set up in the neighborhoods where something changes,” the municipality explains. “And there will be a warning period for those areas where paid parking times are extended. Only within the time period of the extension.”

One exception is the Nonnenveld and surrounding area. This will be ‘resident parking’. Here, parkers pay 35 euros immediately from the first minute. “This is necessary because in the old situation there were many illegal parkers who caused a nuisance and we could not combat them with parking enforcement.”

Parking in the parking garage
The municipality still wants to encourage parking in the garages. The prices in the five municipal parking garages are a lot lower than ‘outside’ parking. “People who have to shop can then park nearby. This way, the spaces on the street remain free for residents to park close to home.”

“The council wants the right parker in the right place,” the municipality adds. A parking space in one of the five garages costs 2.36 euros per hour with a maximum of 14 euros per day. Between 6:00 PM and 9:00 AM the maximum rate is 5.50 euros.
