Tygo Gernandt went to the pub yesterday, a day after the publication of the revealing Private article about his misconduct. Who did he meet there? The writer of the Private article…
Tygo Gernandt’s image is in tatters amid seemingly credible allegations of domestic violence and continued drug use. “I didn’t rush into writing the article in Privé. It required a considerable period of research, hearing, checking and applying audibility,” says journalist Frank Waals in New Revu.
Chopping in sand
Frank says that the entire investigation started in October with a tip. “Once the ball started rolling, stories about Tygo came from all over. When asking for responses from broadcasters and producers, I was always told that they did not want to respond.”
This concerns AvroTros and TV producer Warner Bros, who collaborated with Tygo for Flikken Maastricht. According to Privé, he was fired there, but these two parties keep that under wraps. “I’m surprised that these kinds of responsible parties are digging in their heels. They already did that at the beginning of #MeToo.”
Tygo spoken
Frank himself has been in contact with Tygo from the beginning. “I also spoke to Tygo himself. At first we made a pretty nice piece and he agreed to it. But then the other stories came in about abuse and drug use. They were at odds with what he had first told me.”
Tygo was quite shocked by that. “He texted me back: ‘Sorry? I’m walking off the set right now.’ He called me back and denied everything. In the following weeks I spoke to more people and contacted Tygo again. He didn’t want to call anymore about it, but texted back that he was angry and disappointed. Again he denied a number of things.”
In the pub
How is the relationship between the two gentlemen now? Frank: “Coincidentally, I met him in the pub the day after publication. He behaved calmly, but not cheerfully. His eyes spoke volumes, but we politely shook hands.”
“The invitation is: if he wants to tell his side of the story in an interview, I will sit down with him.”
