His snowboarding videos touched numerous people. Now the Swiss Florian Fischer has died at the age of 24.
Only recently, Sophie Hediger, a Swiss snowboarder, died in an avalanche accident (you can read more about her death here). Now the Swiss snowboard scene has to deal with the next piece of sad news: Florian Fischer died of bone cancer at the age of 24. The fashion label “Beyond Medals” announced this on Instagram.
In a post with several pictures of Fischer, the company wrote: “Our hearts are broken. It’s so unfair that it doesn’t make any sense. We’re sorry for you that you had to leave so early because you deserved so much more and you could have used the time further.”
Fischer practiced his sport professionally from 2015 to 2018 and competed in slopestyle and big air. However, he didn’t make a big career out of competitive sports – but he did make it through videos on social media in which he appeared as an athlete. The video “The Escape” from 2019 in particular brought him a lot of attention. His participation in the snowboard film “Force Majeure”, produced by “Beyond Medals”, also underlined his importance in the scene.
The fashion label’s message continues: “You were so calm and positive when we met a few weeks ago. You held the flag high and remained strong and sensible until the end. How you ended one of the messages in the group chat when you informed us of your condition – ‘Till the wheels fall off, right’. That’s it, brother. We will keep your light shining and never forget what you have contributed to this world.”
Numerous big names in the scene commented on the post. The Swiss Jan Scherrer, who won bronze in the halfpipe at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2022, posted a red heart. The American Judd Henkes, who won bronze in slopestyle at the 2019 Snowboard World Championships, also expressed his condolences with three red hearts.
In addition, “Method Snowboard Magazine” recalled Fischer’s inspiring lifestyle: “We were deeply saddened to learn of Flo’s death after a courageous and relentless battle against a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. Throughout his fight, Flo’s positivity, strength and His passion for life was unwavering and inspired all who knew him.”
