According to Verhagen, it is a persistent misunderstanding that online fraud only happens to older victims. “People always think that it only happens to seniors, ‘if you are over sixty you know nothing about the digital world, or too little, so then you become a victim’, that fact alone is a misconception,” Verhagen explains. “It occurs in all age categories and even the category around 30 who spend the most time on the Internet are the most likely to be victims.”
According to Verhagen, at least one in ten Dutch people will be scammed anyway. “It’s not a matter of if, but when you get scammed.”
