Julian Draxler once became world champion with the German national team. He has been playing in Qatar for a year and a half now – and will continue to stay there.
Julian Draxler has apparently signed a new contract with Al-Ahli. This is reported by the pay TV channel Sky. The midfielder’s new working paper with the Qatari first division club runs until 2028. The old contract would have expired next summer.
According to the report, there were other offers for Draxler. But he rejected all of these. It is said that his departure from Al-Ahli was never an issue. Draxler, who has already contributed six goals and six assists in nine appearances in the Qatar Stars League this season, feels extremely comfortable in the club and in the Arab country.
The 31-year-old was once trained in Schalke 04’s youth ranks and also took his first steps in professional football with the “Knappen”. In 2011, Draxler secured the DFB Cup with Schalke, also scoring in the final against MSV Duisburg to give them a 1-0 lead (final score 5-0).
In August 2015 he decided to leave his youth club for VfL Wolfsburg. But he wasn’t happy with Lower Saxony and moved on to the top French team Paris Saint-Germain in 2017. Draxler celebrated several successes there (including four times French champion), but never progressed beyond the role of a reserve. After a loan to Benfica Lisbon in the second half of the 2022/2023 season, he then moved to Qatar.
Between 2012 and 2022, Draxler also played 58 games for the German national team, in which he scored seven goals. In 2014 he was crowned world champion with the selection in Rio and was able to take part in the legendary 7-1 win against Brazil during the tournament. Three years later, Draxler captained the DFB team at the Confed Cup in Russia and ultimately led the team to victory in the tournament.
