Cycling star Remco Evenepoel is fighting through rehab after his serious training crash at the beginning of December. Despite the harsh reality at the beginning of the year, the Belgian only sets the highest goal for 2025.
At the beginning of December, Remco Evenepoel collided with a post bus during training. The consequences: multiple fractures to the right shoulder blade, right hand and ribs.
But: The Belgian did not let the devastating diagnosis discourage him. “Every year at breakfast on the first of January I write down my goals for the year,” Evenepoel revealed to the Belgian newspaper “Het Laatste Nieuws” shortly before the turn of the year.
At the top of the 24-year-old’s list is nothing less than the most famous cycling race in the world – Le Tour de France. “To be honest, I only have one thing on my mind. That’s to be at the top of the Tour. The rest isn’t really important,” said Evenepoel, formulating his goal for 2025.
And a little more precisely: “Be at the highest level for three weeks and do better than last year.”
Cycling star Evenepoel expresses clear career goals
Last year, Evenepoel only had to admit defeat to Tour giants Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard in the hunt through France. The Tour de France is a lifelong dream for the 2022 Vuelta winner.
“My overall career goal is clear: one day I want to win the Tour. That’s the only thing I really want to check off,” said Evenepoel.
The former world champion has already reached the summit of the sport in 2024. At the Paris Olympics he won gold in the road race and the individual time trial. “It’s pretty crazy. My career may not even be half over yet. I don’t know what’s to come, but I’ve already had my number one moment,” said Evenepoel about his great moment.
It will probably take a while until he gets back into a similar shape after his horror fall. The Arrow of Brabant in April is seen as a possible start to the season for Evenepoel. “I’m trying to concentrate on the Ardennes classics,” he said. But he doesn’t want to be in top form until July anyway.
