“Squid Game” was the most-watched Netflix series of all time. The sequel is now picking up.
The second season of “Squid Game” received over 68 million views in the first four days of its release. This sets a new record for the most-watched Netflix series in its first week. This success surpasses the previous mark of 50.1 million views that “Wednesday” reached in November 2022.
“Squid Game” record: Building on old successes
The drama series, which debuted on Netflix on December 26, 2024, is now ranked seventh on the streaming service’s list of the most popular non-English TV titles of all time. The first season of the South Korean production continues to lead this ranking with 265.2 million views.
During the week of December 23-29, the sequel was the most-watched series, the platform announced. The first season also gained popularity again. It ranked third among the most popular non-English series of the week with 8.1 million views.
The plot of the new episodes follows main character Seong Gi-hun, who returns after his victory in the eponymous game and wants to use the money he won to track down the shady company behind the “Squid Game”. By participating again, he wants to undermine the perfidious competition and bring down the system from within.

Netflix recently released a first teaser trailer for the third season of “Squid Game”. The 15-second clip shows three new players in numbered tracksuits. In front of them: the giant “Red Light, Green Light” doll Young-hee, who turns his back to the participants. Her face is directed towards a railway crossing – and on the other side of the tracks, a previously unknown, male version of the killer doll looks ominously into the camera: Chul-su. However, an official release date for the next season is not yet known.
Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke to Variety on December 27 about the upcoming episodes and announced that an exact start date for season 3 would be announced soon. Hwang explained: “I want to be careful because anything I say now could be a spoiler. But I can say that after the launch of season two, we will announce the release date for season three.” He further predicted that the third season is likely to be released in summer or fall 2025.
