Matthijs van Nieuwkerk had to do without his semi-famous children Jet and Kees at his wedding. And that is the big news on the cover of Story this week. “What’s going on?” reads the headline.
It was one of Story’s biggest scoops in the past year: the wedding of Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and his beloved Martha Riemsma. House paparazzo Edwin Smulders somehow knew that the two would tie the knot and recorded it all accurately. It turned out quite a bit casual to be a wedding.
No Kees and Jet
The wedding took place on the Saturday before Christmas and the striking thing is that Matthijs’ children were not present, while Martha’s sons were present. What’s behind this?
De Story has spoken to insiders and they provide the answer. “Sources close to the bridal couple report that Kees and Jet stayed away out of respect for their mother Karin, who Matthijs once called his great love,” can be read in the magazine.
Direct cause
According to the source, Martha was not the direct cause of the break with Karin, but: “According to evil tongues, Martha appeared very quickly on the scene in the life of the then still celebrated TV celebrity.”
Although Kees and Jet were not present at the wedding, ‘according to the same close sources this does not mean that there would be a conflict’.
Celebrities
There were many celebrities present at the wedding, according to Story. This includes Freek de Jonge, Youp van’t Hek, Marc-Marie Huijbregts, Cornald Maas and Jan Slagter.
Jan is the boss of Omroep MAX and has good contact with Matthijs. However, a TV comeback does not seem to be happening. “A source at the Media Park tells Story that the presenter (…) will no longer appear on TV for the time being, but has chosen to play a significant role behind the scenes as an experienced TV maker.”
