Gabriela Dabrowski has had a smile on her face since she beat breast cancer. PDO

Canadian tennis star Gabriela Dabrowski32, took to Instagram to share the news that shocked many: she was diagnosed with breast cancer last spring.

– I know this will come as a shock to many, but I am fine and I will be fine, Dabrowski said at the beginning of his update.

The woman said that she felt a lump in her left breast already in the spring of 2023.

– A couple of months later, the doctor said that it was nothing and that you shouldn’t worry, so I let it be, Dabrowski recalls.

After a year, she felt that the lump had grown. At the WTA’s health checkup, the doctor couldn’t tell what the lump was and told Dabrowski to take pictures.

The woman obeyed the doctor’s instructions and first had a mammogram. After that, she went for an ultrasound. After the imaging, there was a call to the radiologist who read the images. The message was missed.

– It looks ugly. I want you to go for a biopsy immediately, is the doctor’s message.

Biopsy means taking a sample or cell sample from living tissue and examining it.

A sample was taken from Dabrowski’s left breast the very next morning. It was immediately investigated, and the tennis star received an arresting cancer diagnosis the same day.

– These are words you never expect to hear. In one moment, your life or the life of a loved one turns upside down, Dabrowski describes the feeling.

Quick return

After the diagnosis, Dabrowski underwent two surgeries and returned to the playing fields already in June. The doubles specialist was seen, among other things, in the mixed doubles of the Wimbledon tennis tournament Harri Heliövaaran as a pair and at the Paris Olympics, where he won bronze in mixed doubles.

Dabrowski did not want to tell about her breast cancer right away, as she first wanted to deal with the matter calmly with herself and her loved ones.

At the turn of the year, Dabrowski was finally ready to talk about it. She wants to share information about breast cancer and how important it is to detect it early enough.

– After the diagnosis, I was afraid that cancer would be a part of my identity forever. Now I don’t feel that way anymore. It is a privilege to call yourself a survivor.
