Michael van Gerwen made it into the last four at the Darts World Cup in an extremely strong quarter-final. Gerwyn Price, however, has to give up hope of his second World Cup triumph in 2025.
World-class professional Michael van Gerwen is still on course for his fourth title at the Darts World Cup in London. The 35-year-old Dutchman defeated England’s Callan Rydz 5-3 on New Year’s Day and is in the last four for the ninth time. In the high-class match there were a total of 31 shots with 180 points.
Rydz with a class match Rydz, who played an outstanding tournament last year and defeated several seeded professionals in Dimitri van den Bergh (Belgium) and Martin Schindler (Germany), even won more legs than his rival. “Mighty Mike”, as van Gerwen is called, was scheduled for the afternoon session for the first time in over eleven years and 53 World Cup matches. With the score at 2:2, Rydz was close to taking the lead. But the Englishman repeatedly missed great chances on the double fields.
Price succumbs to Dobey
Former darts world champion Gerwyn Price has to give up hope of his second World Cup triumph in 2025. Despite a 2-0 set lead, the Welshman was eliminated 3-5 in the quarter-finals against Englishman Chris Dobey on New Year’s Day – so the 39-year-old is still waiting for his second semi-final appearance at the highlight of the season. So far, Price has only reached the round of the last four in his 2021 World Cup victory.
Price got off to a strong start on Wednesday afternoon (01/01/2025), but after winning sets he had big problems on the doubles fields. In the end, his checkout rate was 26.79 percent – a very weak value. Dobey, who reached the semi-finals of a World Cup for the first time and now has a good chance of taking part in the Premier League owns, only trembled in the seventh set when he missed five match darts. In the eighth round he laid the foundation for success with an early break.
In the semi-finals on Thursday, the 34-year-old will face either the Dutchman Michael van Gerwen or his compatriot Callan Rydz, who will meet on Wednesday in the second game of the afternoon session.
