The traditional New Year’s dive from Wijk aan Zee beach is also cancelled. Just like in Egmond, the organization does not think it is safe with the expected storm and high water. The final decision will be made tomorrow in Zandvoort and on Texel. An overview of (non) diving in North Holland.

The decision in the IJmond was taken in consultation with the Wijk aan Zee Rescue Brigade, according to Esther van Amersfoort of the organization.

“We are extremely sorry to have to cancel the New Year’s Dive, but the circumstances make it irresponsible to continue the event.” Every year, about 1,500 people participate in the dive, which is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

A lot of rain is expected and strong gusts of wind are forecast. The KNMI has therefore issued a code give. Although this applies in North Holland until 8 a.m. on January 1, the organization does not consider it responsible to allow the event to go ahead.

“In combination with the strong wind, this leads to a very strong current, which means that the safety of the participants cannot be guaranteed.”

They already made the decision this morning in Egmond aan Zee. The event that attracts thousands of people every year has also been canceled there due to possible safety risks.

Zandvoort will decide later

The organization of the dive in Zandvoort will decide tomorrow between 10:00 and 11:00 am, a spokesperson told NH. Bloemendaal is also waiting for a possible cancellation.

On Texel, the organization of the largest dive, at De Koog, is pending. The weather forecast fluctuates quite a bit, Kets Kaercher told NH.

“We sail according to what the KNRM advises. Those lines are very short and they think along. When the wind is force 9, what do you do on the beach? It has to remain fun and even your soup blows away.”

They expect to be able to provide a definitive answer within the next 24 hours.

Other organizations, such as in Julianadorp, have not yet announced whether ‘their’ dive will continue.

Independent diving not recommended

Many North Hollanders go into the sea independently on quieter beaches on New Year’s Day. Don’t do this, say both the KNRM and the Rescue Brigade in Wijk aan Zee.

“Do not come to the beach independently and do not attempt to take a dip in the sea. The conditions make this too dangerous.”

Disappointment reigns among the diving organizations. “We hope to welcome everyone again next year for a safe and festive start to the new year.”

All organizations also thank the many volunteers and visitors.
