The accident happened just after 9:30 am in Jules de Troozlaan. According to police, an 80-year-old man fell between the wheels of the tram, but was not run over. The victim was briefly trapped, but was freed by emergency services. It is not yet clear how the accident could have happened. The man was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. The MUG helicopter also came to the scene briefly, but in the end the victim went with the ambulance. The driver of the tram was also taken to hospital. She is in shock and is receiving the necessary assistance.
The trams were immediately evacuated after the accident and the passengers were transferred to Blankenberge station. De Lijn also briefly introduced shuttle buses, but in the meantime tram traffic could be resumed.
