Casting backwards: Magnus Carlsen is allowed to compete in jeans at the World Blitz Chess Championship – and the star of the scene has already promised on social media to make use of his newly won right.
“Oh, I’ll definitely be playing in jeans tomorrow”the Norwegian wrote at X. Shortly before, the world chess association FIDE “delighted” confirmed that the 34-year-old will take part in the tournament new York will compete. When it comes to clothing, you have to be more “flexibility” ready, explained the association.
Good relationship
“We discussed a lot yesterday and maintain a good relationship with FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich”Carlsen said in an interview with a representative of the chess platform he co-developed: “Talking to Dvorkovich and the main sponsor, I felt that we could have fruitful discussions and at the end of the day I decided to play.”
Dvorkovich explained: “It is always necessary to respect the official dress code. However, minor elegant deviations – which may in particular include jeans that match the jacket – are permitted.”

Carlsen caused a scandal at the World Rapid Chess Championship on Saturday when he tried to step up to the board in jeans. FIDE therefore fined him $200 and gave Carlsen an ultimatum.
The 34-year-old then announced his retirement, saying he would rather travel somewhere, “where the weather is nicer than here”. Now he is staying and wants to find out at the World Blitz Chess Championship, which is also taking place in New York.
