The crescent-star team doubled the number of gold medals, which was 3 in Rio 2016, and broke a record at Paris 2024.
Paralympic nationals nearly doubled the number of medals, which was a record of 15 in Tokyo 2020, to 28 medals in Paris, breaking another record.
National para swimmer Umut Ünlü, who won two gold medals, went down in Turkish sports history, while the Women’s National Goalball Team became the paralympic games champion for the 3rd time in a row.
Öznur Cüre Girdi ended Turkey’s 16-year gold medal drought in para archery. In taekwondo, Mahmut Bozteke won the gold medal in the men’s 63 kilo K44 category, and in judo, İbrahim Bölükbaşı won the gold medal in the +90 kilo J2 class, bringing Turkey the first championships in their branches.
YUSUF DIKEÇ MADE HIS MARK ON THE OLYMPICS
Turkish athletes returned from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, held between July 26 and August 11, with 8 medals, 3 silver and 5 bronze.
The national team consisting of Buse Naz Çakıroğlu and Hatice Akbaş in boxing and Yusuf Dikeç and Şevval İlayda Tarhan in shooting won the silver medal in the 10-meter air pistol mixed category.
The Classical Bow Men’s National Team, consisting of Taha Akgül and Buse Tosun Çavuşoğlu in wrestling, Esra Yıldız Kahraman in boxing, Nafia Kuş Aydın in taekwondo, Mete Gazoz, Muhammed Abdullah Yıldırmış and Ulaş Berkim Tümer in archery, won the bronze medal.
National shooter Yusuf Dikeç left his mark on Paris 2024 with his shooting style. The “Yusuf Dikeç pose”, which went viral on social media, became a show of joy for athletes in different branches.
Türkiye ranked 64th in the medal rankings at the Olympics.
TOPRAK RAZGATLIOĞLU, WORLD CHAMPION
National motorcyclist Toprak Razgatlıoğlu declared his championship in the 12th and last leg of the 2024 World Superbike Championship held in Spain. Toprak became world champion for the second time in the organization.
Toprak Razgatlıoğlu finished the organization as champion with 527 points in the general classification, Nicolo Bulega finished second with 484 points, and Alvaro Bautista finished third with 357 points.
FIRST EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FROM METE GAZOZ
Mete Gazoz won the gold medal by beating Den Habjan Malavasic from Slovenia in the men’s classical bow final of the Open Air European Archery Championship held in Germany.
The national athlete, who is an Olympic and world champion, managed to become a European champion for the first time in his career.
At the Open Air European Archery Championship, the Reel Bow Women’s National Team won the gold medal by beating Spain in the final.
AMPUTE FOOTBALL NATIONAL TEAM PROTECTED ITS TITLE
Amputee Football National Team won the cup by beating Spain 3-0 in the final of the European Championship held in France.
Türkiye, which succeeded in winning the cup in the European championships held in 2017 and 2021, thus reached the championship for the third time in a row.
NATIONAL WRESTLERS MADE HISTORY IN EUROPE
Türkiye achieved historical success by winning a total of 17 medals, 7 of which were gold, at the European Wrestling Championship held in Bucharest, the capital of Romania.
Having won the championship as a team in Greco-Roman and freestyle, the national team succeeded in being at the top of two categories in a European Wrestling Championship for the first time.
BUSE TOSUN ÇAVUŞOĞLU WAS SELECTED WOMEN WRESTLER OF THE YEAR
National athlete Buse Tosun Çavuşoğlu was chosen as the best female wrestler of 2024 by the World Wrestling Association.
The World Wrestling Association announced the wrestlers of the year in women’s, men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman categories. The last world champion national wrestler Buse Tosun Çavuşoğlu, who won the bronze medal in the women’s 68 kilo category at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, was chosen as the “best female wrestler in the world”.
This year, Buse also won the first European championship of her career.
Georgian Geno Petriashvili was awarded the wrestler of the year award in men’s freestyle and Japanese Nao Kusaka was awarded the wrestler of the year award in Greco-Roman competition.
WINTER OLYMPICS AND HISTORICAL MEDAL IN FENCING
National athlete Muhammed Bozdağ came second in the short track speed skating men’s 1000 meters final at the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics and brought Turkey its first medal in the history of the organization.
Muhammed, who took to the track in the final on the second day of the games held in South Korea, won the silver medal behind Chinese Zhang Xinzhe (1:26.257) with a time of 1 minute 26.349 seconds.
Nisanur Erbil also achieved a historical success in terms of Turkish fencing.
The national fencer succeeded in reaching the final of the Sword Grand Prix hosted by Tunisia. Nisanur, who lost to Spanish Lucia Martin-Portugues in the final, came in second and brought Turkey its first grand prix medal in this branch.
Türkiye PARTICIPATED IN THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP IN HANDBALL FOR THE FIRST TIME
The National Women’s Handball Team qualified for the European Championship by becoming among the third best teams in the group in the 2024 European Championship Qualifiers.
The national team lost to the host Hungary in the opening match of the championship, and then drew with Northern Macedonia. The crescent-star team, which was defeated by Sweden in its last match in the group, said goodbye to the organization in which it participated for the first time.
ZEYNEP SÖNMEZ CLAIMED THE FIRST WTA CHAMPIONSHIP OF HER CAREER
National tennis player Zeynep Sönmez became the champion by defeating American Ann Li 2-0 in the final of the Merida Open Women’s Tennis Tournament.
With this championship, the 22-year-old national tennis player became the second Turkish female tennis player to win a WTA tournament after Çağla Büyükakçay and entered the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time in her career.
Zeynep, who achieved 3 wins against her opponents in the top 50 this year, also played in the quarter-finals of the Jasmin Open.
