A newly released Nvidia app can significantly slow down the screen refresh of some games.

Nvidia is the second most valuable company in the world after Apple. RITCHIE B. TONGO

Last month, Nvidia updated the management application for its graphics cards. Both the company’s Control Panel and Geforce Experience app had always been a little confusing, but the new concisely named Nvidia program arrived to fix matter.

The new program has some clear advantages over the old one. For example, you don’t need to log in to get the graphics card drivers updated.

Ars Technica and Tom’s Hardware however, reported that the release of the program has not gone completely smoothly. Namely, Nvidia can weaken the screen update speed of games, even if you don’t even use its features.

The cause of the problems seems to be the Game Filter feature included in the program. Among other things, Nvidia says it improves the “dynamic vibrancy” of games and emulates HDR features in games that don’t support them.

The story continues below the picture.

The effects of the Nvidia application on the game’s screen update apparently also depend on the configuration of the computer itself.

In the update of the biggest drop screen, Game Filter seems to be causing Tom’s Hardware based on the experiment in Assassin’s Creed Mirage. With certain settings, its update speed decreased by as much as 12 percent.

Baldur’s Gate 3, Black Myth: Wukong, Flight Simulator 2024 and Stalker 2 also updated more slowly, although the difference was not as drastic.

According to Ars Technica, the difference is the same as if you changed your graphics card from an RTX 4070 Ti Super to an older RTX 4070 Ti or 4070 Super model.

On the other hand, according to Tom’s Hardware, the drop also depends on the configuration of the computer. One particularly unlucky player told Tom’s Hardware that Black Myth: Wukong’s screen refresh dropped by up to 15 percent after installing the Nvidia app on their computer.

After the matter came to light, Nvidia announced that it is aware of the problems with the Game Filter function and is working on the issue at the moment.

The problem can be temporarily fixed by turning off the application’s filters. They can be found in the application by selecting Nvidia App Settings > Features > Overlay > Game Filters and Photo Mode.
