João Pereira should actually continue the successful work of his predecessor. Nothing will come of this: Sporting Lisbon has separated from the coach – and already has a new one.

A short term of office for the successor to successful coach Ruben Amorim: After just six weeks, the collaboration between Sporting Lisbon and João Pereira is already ending. The traditional Portuguese club announced the previously suspected separation on the night of Boxing Day. “A lion forever. Thank you João Pereira,” the club wrote on X.

Sporting presented Rui Borges as their new head coach on Thursday morning. The 43-year-old is moving from Vitória Guimarães to Lisbon. Pereira only took over from Amorim, who had moved to Manchester United, in mid-November.

Pereira, a former Sporting professional, had previously coached the club’s U23s. In his short tenure as head coach of the professional team, he achieved three wins in eight competitive games, only one of which was in the Portuguese league.

The sporting situation came to a head shortly before Christmas: Sporting lost the league lead to Benfica Lisbon. Now the prestigious city derby against the arch-rival is on Sunday (9.30 p.m.) – then under the direction of Rui Borges.
