Last winter Andreas Wellinger came in second overall in the Four Hills Tournament. This year, the DSV star wants to do a little better and has drawn up a clear plan for this. The German ski jumping ace wants to be “fresh and awake” with consistency in the fourth competition in Bischofshofen.
Even though Pius Paschke, with his World Cup victories and lead in the overall World Cup, is considered the best hope for the first German tour success in over 20 years, Andreas Wellinger should also be reckoned with.
After all, Wellinger came in second overall in the last edition of the tour.
“If you jump on a good tour and end up on the winner’s podium in second place, like last season, then you’re motivated to want to do even better next time,” says the Traunstein native on the website of the German Ski Association (DSV ) quoted before the start of the Four Hills Tournament with the qualification in Oberstdorf on December 28th.
Wellinger cannot allow himself to make a weak jump
And there were successes to celebrate this winter too: the DSV star won on the large hill in Kuusamo, Finland, at the beginning of December. But the 29-year-old still lacks the necessary consistency.
Wellinger also knows this himself, as he admitted: “In terms of jumping, I currently lack the necessary consistency to be able to consistently perform top jumps.”
“I’ve managed to do that very well in the last few weeks,” said Wellinger, recalling his World Cup victory. “To be successful on the tour, however, you can’t afford any weak jumps. I’m working on that.”
The two-time Olympic champion has come up with a plan for this. “We analyzed last year’s tour and found some points that we could do better,” said Wellinger.
“The focus is on my energy management. My goal is to jump in Bischofshofen as fresh and alert as I did at the start in Oberstdorf.”
